Let’s Go Fishing

We have a family tradition that the person with the least amount of fish caught, has to buy everybody McDonald’s coffee (we love our coffee).

Fishing is one of the many things my family and I enjoy together. Ever since I was a little girl, my dad, Lance would take my twin sister, Taylor and I fishing.

Growing up we caught minnows and crayfish in our little nets along the rocks of Rafferty Dam, but as we got older we became experts in using our fishing rods. We spent many hours fishing and fell in love with it. Fishing is one of our favourite hobbies to do in Estevan.  A perfect time to cast out is on Free Fishing days put on by the Government of Saskatchewan.

My lucky fishing spot at Rafferty Dam

To fish in Saskatchewan you need a fishing licence, I purchased a season pass for $37.00. You can also get a single day pass if you want to come out and experience fishing for the day for $13.00. I like to fish at Rafferty Dam, a 2-minute drive off Highway 39. The rocks are usually where I fish. The water is crystal clear!!

I recommend going in the evening because during the day when it’s hot the fish won’t come out. Rafferty Dam has Walleye, Yellow Perch and Northern Pike. Walleye is our favourite to eat, sooooo good 🙂

I went the other night and caught 4 walleye but took home 3 (the maximum). One of them must have been over two pounds, what a beauty. The great part is you don’t need to be an expert at fishing to catch anything! I also like to take my shoes off, dip my feet in the clear shallow water and cast away while enjoying the sunset.

Baby Walleye that I returned.

Taylor lost this time and she wasn’t happy about. I sure am happy to end the night off with a good haul and a free coffee in my hands.

Until next time!
